Privacy
Sage & Student is run by Sage & Student Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number [to be added]; registered office [to be added]). We are responsible for the personal information described here. If you have a question about your information, email hello@sageandstudent.com.
The short version
- We collect as little as we can. There are no accounts, no advertising trackers and no profiles.
- Google Analytics only runs if you say yes, and you can change your mind at any time from Cookie choices at the bottom of every page.
- We never sell your information.
What we collect, and why
- Newsletter. If you subscribe, we keep your email address so we can send you new essays. Our email provider, Kit, stores it for us. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. We rely on your consent.
- Comments. If you comment, we keep the name and comment you write. Comments only appear after we’ve read them, and we don’t ask for your email address. We rely on our legitimate interest in running a useful discussion.
- Votes and questions. If you vote on Coming next or suggest a question, we keep the vote or the question. Your browser keeps a random code so it remembers which essays you voted for. That code isn’t linked to you.
- Advertiser enquiries. If you use the advertising form, we keep what you send so we can reply. We rely on our legitimate interest in replying.
- Analytics, only if you agree. Google Analytics tells us which essays are read and roughly how people find them, using cookies on your device. We rely on your consent.
- Keeping the site safe. Our host, Cloudflare, processes your IP address to deliver pages and block attacks. When you send a comment, vote, question or enquiry, we also keep a scrambled code made from your connection. It changes every day, can’t be turned back into your IP address, and is used only to slow down spam.
Who else handles it
Cloudflare hosts the site and stores comments, votes, questions and enquiries. Kit sends the newsletter. Google provides analytics, only with your consent. Sanity holds the essays themselves and no information about readers. Some of these companies are based in the United States; where your information leaves the UK, it’s protected by the safeguards UK data protection law requires.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
- Comments: while they’re published, or until you ask us to remove them. Comments we don’t approve are deleted.
- Votes and suggested questions: for as long as Coming next uses them.
- Advertiser enquiries: up to two years.
- Analytics: Google keeps the detailed data for two months.
Children and young people
Many of our readers are students, and some are under 18. That’s why we collect so little: no accounts, no profiles, no advertising tracking, and analytics only with consent. Please don’t put personal details such as your school, phone number or address in a comment. If you do, we’ll remove them.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent at any time. Email hello@sageandstudent.com. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change how we use your information, we’ll update this page.
